I could use braces again but don't want them. If I had one tooth shaved slightly I would be happy ...Question.

Okay so the deal is this- I could use braces again because I have an overbite + one of my front teeth sticks out farther than the other thus making it look shorter than the other. (I know, should have listened about those retainers) This is the only thing I dislike about my smile. I have good teeth and gums. But here is my thing- If I could just have the tooth that looks longer shaved to match the others legenth I would be perfetly happy. The problem is Im afraid that my dentist will encourage me to get braces again and refuse to shave down the tooth. My fiance and I just moved so im looking for a new dentist. Any tips on how to get my Dr. to understand that im not looking for a new smile but rather a small fix that will make me happy. I just hate being pushed into things and I feel like this may be one time where I cant work around it. Thanks for your help!

I had the same problem. Just went to a different dentist and told them what I wanted. Told them I had planned on getting some veneers on my other teeth (a lie) but couldnt afford it just yet and wanted to get an estimate. Think of something big your teeth might need and make it seem like you will come back for that. But if you have good teeth and good gums I dont know what improvement you could make up...sorry cant help you. leave me alone
Reply:the only way you will get the dentist to do it is if you tell him to do it, you have every right to ask for what you want and if the dentist says no then walk out, easy as. If the dentist is a professional he will realise a simple procedure is always better than complicated orthodontics
Reply:Depending on your health care plan you can always shop around. Speak with a few dentists who might be willing to do it. I like my dentist because he is willing to discuss cosmetic issues with me. (Not like I need to, because I have perfect teeth.)
Reply:I recently got braces for the second time, after a LOT of thought, and it is the best thing I've done for myself in a long time. I did my research, looked around at all of the new options that are out there since the first time around (got those off about 9 1/2 years ago). My situation sounds a lot like yours. My two front teeth had shifted so much that one was pushed backwards, the other forwards, so I had a terrible snaggletooth. After only three months, there is a HUGE difference.

I decided early on that Invisalign was not for me, based solely on the price. There are more options out there than the old-fashioned metal braces. What I went with are ceramic braces, not bright white but close in color to my teeth. If you're not standing too close, you hardly see them. Close up, the most noticable part is the wire. There are also braces than can be fitted behind your teeth, so no one would know you had them. The new retainers are different, too. I will end up with a Invisalign-like tray once I get my braces off next year.

My point is, take a look at all your options before you decide. Shaving a tooth to match the rest might not be a healthy thing, if it exposes the nerves, but talk it over with a dentist or two before you make a decision. You can also look for a local ortho to see that he says. Many places will give you a free consultation if you're not ready to make that move yet. There are a lot more adults in the world of orthodontia out there (I'm 27 myself) than you may think.
