Wisdom teeth extraction complications?

PLEASE READ CAREFULLY

Its tuesday day 5 so I am finally starting to get over the pain. I still have numbness on the left side of my jaw and lip. The Dr. said it was from the swelling pressing on a nerve. He is not worried about it but wants to keep an eye on it. I am also having trouble opening my mouth. It feels like the right side of my jaw will not stretch properly. It is agony to try to chew anything and that is only when it is soft enough to squish it in between my teeth. I can fit a spoon or fork in my mouth but if it piled high anything on it falls off.

Questions refer particularly to the stiff jaw not so much the numbness although additional info on that is welcome.

Has anyone experienced anything like this?

What is causing it?

When will it go away?

Is there anything aside from heat I can do to help it along?

Are the two problems related(numbness and stiffness)?

Wisdom teeth extraction complications?
My daughter had these problems with her wisdom tooth extraction...she said heat helped, but she lost 15lbs. from only eating jello. She was told the same thing by the dentist, it probably took about 2 weeks for the pain to go and another week for the stiffness.
Reply:when i had mine removed the numbness stayed a while after with the stiffness but the stiffness went away before the numbness did. it took about a week or so after the fact i would ask your doctor for a second opinion and see what another one has to say about it. they may have a better answer than the one your currently seeing
Reply:This is normal with a wisdom teeth extractions. #1 you had to have your mouth open for awhile, and this has made your jaw stiffer than normal. Then with the swelling that will make it not open as wide either. Every day it will get a little bit better. Take an icepack or anything frozen, and put it on one side for 20 minutes, and rotate it to the other side to 20 minutes. Do this a few times through out the day, and it will decrease the swelling. Also take some aleive. It is an anti-inflamitory, and can help. Dont wory, just let it rest and put some ice on it, it will get better in a few days.
