Is anyone watching Dr. Phil?

There is this girl on there right now who is obsessed with some online world. I am assuming it is something similar to the Sims. Seriously, it has taken over her life completely.

Do you know anyone like this? Why would someone want to do this....And why would the parents allow it? The mother is on the show complaining, but yet the girl still has access to a computer. (They even said that the girl gets out of bed, and stays on the computer, sometimes neglecting to shower, brush her teeth, get dressed, etc.) This definitley sounds like some bad parenting to me...what do you guys think about this? How can a parent complain about something, but continue to allow it to happen.

Is anyone watching Dr. Phil?
ABSOLUTELY!! I agree with you 1000%. I understand how it could begin to get out of hand, but it%26#039;s the parent%26#039;s responsibility to monitor and set the limits for how much she is allowed to be online/play the game. They tried a time limit of 4 HOURS and she couldn%26#039;t even abide by that! In the famous words of Dr. Phil, %26quot;Are you kidding me?!%26quot; The extreme yet simple solution after all else has failed is No computer access = no game. Glad to know I%26#039;m not the only one that thought the parents dropped the ball.
Reply:Yeah that%26#039;s bad but not as bad as that girl who was talking to that guy from the middle east. (She was on Dr. Phil too) She ran off to the middle east when she was 16 and her mom got her back but continued to let her talk to him.
Reply:Well, it%26#039;s easier said than done.

I know people like that. I think it%26#039;s normal -which-is-horrible-. My parents complain about everything too, from who has to stock up the toilet tissue -%26gt; why is the hall so messy. But never do anything to the situation.
Reply:My sis%26#039;s bf is like that. his entire life takes place on world of warcraft. they have 3 small children that he is supposed to take care of during the day (my sis works full time and he is unemployed), but at least 12 hrs a day he dedicates to world of warcraft, often leaving the babies crying or with full and nasty diapers. They had diaper rash (bleeding and painful) for at least 4mos because he wouldn%26#039;t change them right away.
Reply:Yes, unfortunately lots of people are addicted to online worlds. Look at WoW and Anarchy Online. Some people spend days at a time one these games. It%26#039;s sad. I%26#039;ve even heard a few stories of people neglecting themselves for so long that they die because they are so engrossed in these games. It is extremely bad parenting though, I agree. Everyone wonders why childhood obesity is so out of control. If all kids do is sit at the computer all day, what else can we expect?
Reply:I didn%26#039;t know that Dr. Phil had that on, but I know about the computer addict.

My daughter does the same thing, she is 24 and has a job and spends all her free time on the computer playing World of Warcraft. She says the people on there are her friends. She never did have many friends, like one or two, all her life.

She does do keep up with the personal hygiene.

She didn%26#039;t start this until she was 22 and out on her own. I would like to get her out with some friends but don%26#039;t know how at her age.

I do make her go shopping with me and do other stuff but young people need to spend time with their peers.

How old was the girl on DR. phil?

So many kids are getting addicted to computer gaming. What did he say about it?
Reply:It%26#039;s just like any old addiction, it comes with withdrawal symptoms when it%26#039;s taken away. Mother feels bad that she sees her child in pain and gives it back. Simple as that.
Reply:that is bad. and gross

no i dont thank God.

but if you think about it, isnt yahoo answers adictions the same thing??
Reply:Actually I think it was secondlife.com.

I can see how that could get out of hand though, the computer is addictive.
Reply:Well, yeah... my husband has an obession with World of Warcraft. He stays on for hours and hours (up to 10 hours a day). There%26#039;s cases of children dying because their parents starve them to death because they are too busy playing World of Warcraft. It was in the news a few months ago... there was one guy who commited suicide over World of Warcraft. His player name was %26quot;ILuvU%26quot;. There%26#039;s a lot of people who are leaving their spouses for people they met on the game and never even talked to in real life. Games can certainly take over your life.
Reply:Some people just find a non-existent world to be more appealing than that of realism, where pragmatism can frighten those who aren%26#039;t ready to be a functioning member of society. This girl is just a perfect example of that and it is really sad. I%26#039;m not going to complain about the mother%26#039;s parenting because truthfully no one in this world could be a perfect parent and they always come with flaws. Knowing her daughter%26#039;s circumstances, she probably didn%26#039;t want to drive her crazy or was simply just afraid of the outcome. It was just fortunate that Dr. Phil encouraged her to take the computer away. And let%26#039;s be honest, parents complain about a LOT of things but do we honestly keep up to their rules? Even though we probably break rules not as severe it applies to the fact that children don%26#039;t obey their parents 100% and we shouldn%26#039;t be as so harsh as to judge her mother, even though she could be a lot better at it.

Seriously though the girl needs to grab a hold on life. Even though she%26#039;s an adolescent and is nearing adulthood, she needs to experience childhood to the fullest in order to lead a normal life without any setbacks. Living in a different world and then suddenly waking up to find out you%26#039;re in reality can be psychologically damaging. There may be countless lives on the internet but we only have 1 in this world so we should all just try to live our best :).\

Just to add, I don%26#039;t think games or the internet itself is bad. Just because there are millions of cases of people losing themselves in a fantasy doesn%26#039;t mean the videogame or technology is bad. As Dr. Phil said they%26#039;re fun and to mess around with and although they%26#039;ve become scapegoats for the psychologically ill or even for the extremely bored, they were really built to do more good than harm.
Reply:My cousin%26#039;s friend is exactly like that. It%26#039;s kind of scary. She wakes up, signs on to myspace for like 6 hours and then plays runescape for 4 hours. She homeschools herself and is months behind on her schoolwork.
Reply:She has an addiction. You can be addicted to anything that gives you an euphoric feeling due to the neurotransmitters in your brain. Although limiting usage to the computer sounds like a great idea, it will not fix the problem. And punishing a child or anything else will not fix the problem either. Someone with an addiction needs to seek help from a professional. This girl needs to get help. Doing anything other than seeking help from a professional is not going to stop the problem.

* I think a lot of people are failing to see that this is an addiction. It has taken over her life. She needs to do it. Taking away the computer will not work. Punishing her will not work. She will go and find a computer somewhere else and do this. When she%26#039;s doing this she feels the same way say someone with a drug problem feels when they are shooting up. Certain neurotransmitters in her brain make her feel great, just like someone taking a drug would feel.*
Reply:It is mostly the parents fault. Lack of discipline and control. They should have kept her away if it was getting bad. Now the parents have to pay the price.
Reply:Nan,

the girl is 13.Bad parenting!!!If she is so concerned about it she should do something abou it before it gets more out of hand than it already is.
Reply:I used to do that during the summer with maplestory. But... i had nothing to do... not like i was neglecting anything.
Reply:I know There.com and have had an account in the game since 2004. It%26#039;s very lightheated and community oriented. It%26#039;s a game, just like any other video game (much like sims). You have to turn it off sometimes. And take people you meet there at face value, you never know who is really on the other side. People get addicted to Quake and Unreal tournament too. When will Dr. Phil cover those more violent game addictions?
Reply:I just started playing There a few weeks ago. It%26#039;s pretty fun and I%26#039;ve met a couple really nice people there that I actually im and email with outside of the game. However, I am 34 years old. I will not allow my 10 year old daughter to play it. I%26#039;ve heard and seen too many concerning things. I%26#039;ve walked past people talking in sexual details, I%26#039;ve been asked by people to have cyber sex with them, and if you have the voice part, you can hear lots of swearing and other inappropriate things that are just not good for kids to hear. I meet many kids on there around 15 years old and recently I met an 11 year old girl. I usually try to caution them to be careful what they say and walk away from creeps.

I can understand where it would be extremely addictive, especially to children who are not very socially accepted in their own schools or other environements. Best to keep their activity extremely monitored or not let them on at all in my opinion.
