Dr. Sam, I need some advice and info?

Hi,

I got told in November that i need to have surgery done to remove to baby teeth that are %26#039;submerged%26#039;. They are 2 of the 4 baby teeth that I still have (the dentist said that I am missing 4 adult teeth) Can you give me some information about the surgery and recovery. and also whether I would need any orthodontic work done afterwards to close the gaps.

Dr. Sam, I need some advice and info?
I do not know how old you are, but I will guess that you are a young adult, as this is when this issue is often addressed. Local anesthetic is generally quite adequate for this. It sounds worse than it it. The teeth will probably have to be %26quot;sectioned,%26quot; or cut into 2 or 3 pieces, depending on how many roots there are. This is done by drilling, just as if you were going to get a filling, only deeper. You%26#039;re numb. Don%26#039;t worry about it. Once the tooth is cut into parts, it is usually pretty simple to tease each root out one-by-one until the tooth is out. The space that remains is usually %26quot;closed%26quot; by making a replacement for the missing tooth. This can be done with an implant or with a bridge or with partials. To replace all four teeth can become quite expensive, like something on the order of $10-12,000. Partials would be a lot cheaper, but somewhat of an annoyance. MAYBE you can get the spaces closed orthodontically, especially if you have some crowding among your other teeth. Be sure to ask about this.

Now... While we%26#039;re asking questions, ask what will happen if the teeth are just left in place. If you don%26#039;t get a convincing answer, consider doing exactly that. Some dentists just want to take out these over-retained baby teeth %26quot;because they are there.%26quot; Get a good explanation. The more %26quot;submerged%26quot; they are, the more likely they should be removed, because they are likely to cause troubles with the adjacent teeth. Ask anyhow.
Reply:I hope it all goes well. Don%26#039;t forget to ask why the teeth need to come out.

Thanks for the feedback. Report It
