I had my 2 bottom wisdom teeth removed about 3 weeks ago and I developed Dry Socket 2 days later.?

The Dr. put a dressing in there and told me to go home and act normal and eat whatever I wanted. Well a week later I was rinsing with the syringe they gave me and the dressing came out. Iam not in alot of pain but when I looked back there, theres a hole and it is VERY dark and the other side isnt like that. It is also making my other teeth hurt. IS THIS NORMAL????

it is normal to feel some soreness in the area, but it should not be painful. the dry socket may have compounded the pain though. what a dry socket is, is that when you have a tooth removed, you basically have a hole where the tooth once was. the bleeding from the extraction creates a large clot which fills the hole and keeps bacteria from entering the site. if this clot falls out prematurely, you get what%26#039;s called a dry socket, which means that the hole (and the nerve inside) is now exposed to the open and bacteria can enter causing infection. by packing the hole again, your doctor simply created an artificial clot to keep bacteria from getting inside. the dressing isnt meant to stay there forever, but just long enough for the wound to close. i dont think it%26#039;s a big deal if it falls out, but if it%26#039;s painful, you should see the doc again. regarding the hole, bone grows much slower than soft tissue, and you will probably have a hole where your tooth once was for about 6 months until the bone can fill in the void.

Reply:That%26#039;s not normal, or at least I don%26#039;t think. You shouldn%26#039;t have been eating whatever you wanted. I was given a list of foods to avoid and how to be careful to avoid infection and dry socket.





Go back asap and ask what is wrong
Reply:If the teeth were impacted then that would be bad. But if the teeth were exposed this maybe a little more normal. Or maybe the stitches fell out and the gap opened. But as long as you ain%26#039;t bleeding. I%26#039;d go to the dentist right away and have it looked at.
Reply:I had a dry socket each and every time I had a tooth pulled.%26amp; this is the worst kind of pain(nerve).There was only one dentist that ever successfully treated this for me,and he had to pack the gauze dressing in the hole using an unreal amount of gauze- thought he was never going to stop but the minute he had enough packed in so tightly that no air could reach inside at all--and the gauze did not come out until he took it out. I HAD INSTANT relief and he had so much packing in in there that he took it out after about 3-4 days %26amp;I never hurt again. No other dentist would ever do this..sounds like your dentist treated the same way all the others did to me before him. He moved away from me..
Reply:Sometimes the dressing has to be replaced every few days until you get some relief. But every person is different. I%26#039;ll put a dressing down into the socket and never hear from them again, but i suppose they just dont want to keep coming back to see me :)





It is normal to feel a bit achy especially if those teeth were impacted and had to be cut out, but if your pain is so intense that you have an earache, cant sleep, have bad breath, AND pain medication is still not working, then yes, go back to see the dentist.





But like the dental student said, bone takes longer than tissue to heal, so you%26#039;ll see a hole back there for a bit longer. Plus one side was probably more difficult to remove than the other, giving the different healing rates.
Reply:I had dry sockets when I got my wisdom teeth out too. It is very painful.





I had both of my lower sockets packed twice. The doc told me when the packing is starting to work its way out, that%26#039;s a sign of healing. I had a hole in my gums too. If it still hurts though, it may need to be packed again. You should probably see the surgeon just to be sure.
