How long would you leave your 10.5 month old in the crib for a nap?

My 10.5 month old has been resisting his naps. He used to go down for 2 naps a day and now if I can get one nap in, I am very lucky. Before he went down no problem, but now he just doesn't settle. FYI he is starting to teeth, and the dr checked he ears and there is no ear infection. I used to put him down and he would play himself to sleep, but now he SCREAMS MURDER. I was leaving him in the crib for 1/2 hr but after trying him for 2 naps and not getting any out of him, what do I do? He is just becoming chronically overtired. Tell me honestly how long you would leave your 10.5 month old in the crib for before calling the nap over with.

How about trying a swing or bouncer to help him fall asleep?
Reply:They can nap for as long as 4 to six hours. They do alot of growing in this point in their life. I would try to sit there on the floor by the crib and lay him down. Just rest your hand on his little head and reassure him that you are still there. Of course baby orajel and tylenol will help with the pain. He will eventually get used to you there and fall asleep. Jst make sure you keep to a routine schedule of that everyday. Babies like routine and like to know what will be happening "next".
Reply:1/2 hour is what my pediatrician recommended. I think that would be my max as well.

People are going to chastise you for letting him cry that long, but many medical professionals would ok your method. I think it is a phase, my daughters phases only last about 2-4 weeks. You may have to tough it out till then! I would continue to try to lay him down though.

Edit: I wanted to add that different things work for different kids. When my daughter gets cranky I just walk in her room with her, turn off the lights, hand her her naptime blanket and lay her down. Some babies may actually need a routine like a story or rocking, but I was discouraged from this to help her learn to put herself to sleep.
Reply:I'm one of those freaks who won't let the baby sit there and cry at all, and I have an 18 month old who hasn't napped consistently for several months now. In fact, he went to 1 nap around 9 months, and that was only 45 minutes, if we were lucky. He'll sleep if I'm holding him, but that's about it. There are days where I do have to bite the bullet and just hold him until he falls asleep. I can then put him in bed (Not his crib. he will NOT nap there, no matter what).

I don't really have any helpful suggestions or advice, but you are definitely not alone. The only other thing that works without fail here is a nice country drive in the car, but that sure gets expensive.
Reply:My son is 15 months and I don't let him play in the crib because I didn't want him to confuse it's purpose.

The crib is for sleeping...not playing.

Everyday, I nurse him until he's drowsy and then I place him in the crib awake, and cover him with his blanket and tell him it's night night time...

If I tried to just put him in there wide awake and walk away...he'd scream bloody murder too...

He did have a little resistance with napping about that age...but he has since gotten over it...

Try getting him drowsy with a sleep routing first and then put him in the crib.

Story, Bottle Snuggle Crib ...whatever...but it needs to be the same every time every day...once he learns the pattern...he'll get with the program.

Good Luck!

I too am one of those "freaks" that can't let the baby cry...lol I used to have to rock and sing him completely to sleep everytime ...and then I'd have to tip toe to the crib and hope and pray he didn't wake up because then we'd have to start the hour long process again.... That process has evolved to the one explained above....it takes time...but having a sleep regimen and a regular pattern to follow...will make it easier for both of you.
Reply:I have an 11 month old who has gone from two naps to one recently. Some days he will sleep 2-3 hours, other days it more like 30-45 minutes. Those days, he is so tired in the evening, it's hard for me to keep him awake through dinner. When he wakes up after a short nap, I DO leave him in his crib for like, 10-15 minutes to see if he'll go back to sleep. Sometimes he does, but not usually.

I think you're doing a good job, making sure he goes down, even if he doesn't sleep. At least he's getting some "down time". If he gets really upset, you could try cuddling with him and reading him a book in your lap. That may get him to settle down and fall asleep.

Sorry I can't give you more advice, but he may be getting enough sleep for him, everyone is different. My son doesn't nap well all the time, but he sleep about 13-13.5 hours at night, so I figure he's getting what he needs.

Good luck, if you think he is really overtired, you could talk to your ped. for suggestions.
Reply:I have crib for night sleep and moses basket or pram for day sleeps....
