Sick kitty? what can i do? Please help!?

My Bach is about 13 years old, recently he lost one of his top canine teeth and i was worried about infection. So i took him to the drs and they ran a blood test and he came back good, as well as the recommended for him to have a dental cleaning with possible teeth removal, as they did they removed 3 teeth. It has been over a week. He isn't eating or drinking. He came from the potty and he has diarrhea and blood in his poop, which was more like mucus rather than poop. I took him back to see the dr and they gave him a steroid shot with vitamin k which she said should help with his appetite, as well as more antibiotics (it smells like tuna...ugg) and he refuses to have anything to do with anything as far as food. I have resorted to using the recommended hills a/d formula watered down and syringed into his mouth, but he hates it. I love my kitty so much can someone please help me. I feel like had i not taken him into the dr in the first place he would still be loving cuddling kitty.

I'm sorry your kitty isn't well. Squirting Pedialite (for fluids and electrolites) and AD into his mouth is a good idea.

Blood in the stool can be from stress. Its good he's gone back to the vet.
Reply:well you can try whiskas makes a milk for cats or try some soft gravy cat foods or you can try meat flavored baby food warmed up just about 10 sec in the microwave would be tempting to him...good luck i hope he eats for you
Reply:His teeth must still hurt or he is traumatized by all his vet visits. But force feeding him is a good idea. With the syringe. Maybe a second opinion with a different vet? Usually though cats will eat when they are ready. WHat about canned food?
Reply:I feel for you--I have 4 cats and love them a ton. One of my cats had extreme dental problems, to the point that he had a full mouth extraction at 2 years of age. The thing is, a tooth infection can cause major problems elsewhere. If 3 more teeth were extracted he might have had trouble brewing already. Make sure you keep up with the antibiotics (not fun, I know). Cats hide illness/pain all too well. My cat had an abcessed tooth and I had no idea it was that bad until the vet took a look. Hopefully your cat's vet visit will prevent worse future problems.
Reply:You can try some tuna water. The water from the tuna cans, with some of the tuna mixed in really fine. It was the only thing my cat would touch after he got sick for two weeks.


The important thing is liquid, give Bach a place to hide, and other then try and get him to drink/eat a few times a day leave him be. Cats like to heal in private and are known to hide for weeks if they don't feel good.

Reply:To feed him, try the following formula, which I have fed successfully to kittens and cats. It is nutrient dense, very digestible, as liquid as you would like it to be and provides liquid as well as solid nourishment.





In a cup of Lactaid, lactose-free milk, dissolve a tablespoon of Gerber's Baby Rice cereal. You may want to nuke the milk until it is just warm enough for the cereal to dissolve, just to lukewarm. Add one tablespoon of Gerber's Stage I baby food chicken, one raw egg yolk (no raw egg white - cats cannot digest it) and half of a human multivitamin/mineral tablet, dissolved. Buzz this in the blender until smooth, and feed him this. You may have to thin it a little with Lactaid to get it into the eyedropper.





When he begins to eat again, try to get some yogurt into him, a good yogurt that advertises itself as probiotic and has lots of different live cultures listed by name on the ingredients, to counteract the beneficial bacteria-killing effect of those antibiotics. And check his gums to see if they are inflamed, because a warm salt-water compress will be soothing if they are.





Just be very nurturing with him, attentive and gentle. It sounds as though you don't need to hear this.





And another thing. Check with your friends or call around to other vets in your town, especially a cat specialist, if there is one. II would think that in an older cat (he is not really "old" yet, but he's heading toward senior), a vet would want to stabilize him as quickly as possible to avoid any kind of spiral. And if he is not stabilizing, I would consider a second opinion. Call around. I do think a second opinion is in order.

Some antibiotics like clavamox are known to upset a cat;s stomch. Stop giving the antibiotics and seded what happens.


SAlso, have you touched around the area where the teeth were pulled to make sure there is no pain and nothing 'left'?


Have you tried tempting him with chicken, coldcuts, tuna, yougart, baby food no onion? Was he given pain meds?


The ad formula is not qulity but it is calorie intensive so is good for a cat not eating.Try pureying it in a blender with some water added.
Reply:You can certainly call and talk to a different vet at a different clinic about this, over the phone as a consultation. The cat should be eating again by now, after a week. I've had teeth pulled on some of mine and they only were down for 2 days.





The mucus is a big warning sign--something isn't right and it's not because he's not eating. A consult should give you a handle on this especially if you ask for a vet who specializes in cats. Some are more dog oriented, but a cat oriented one would be up on all the side issues more.





Keep up with the syringing, he needs some food in him. Offer him some strong smelling foods like Kentucky Fried Chicken with the skin and bones off, a lot of cats go for that. Or try a jar of meat baby food (just meat, no veggies), that tempts cats back into eating. If he's on clavamox, yes that can make some cats so nauseous to their stomach they don't want to eat--stop that antibiotic and ask for a different one.





He was hopefully on pain meds for the first three days?
