I had a filling, my tooth was chipped...what happens now?

I had a rootcanal and filling on the top row, left side, third tooth from the back, when I was like 8 years old. Im now 21 so the filling is pretty old. Last night me and my new dog were playing and we bashed heads and of course it was on the side where that tooth is, and a piece of tooth chipped off!!!

Think of it like this. Take a shell with filling. A piece of shell chips off, but hte filling is still intact.

It was small but big at the same time. The filling is still there and it was only half of one side of the tooth that chipped off. But it feels wierd i feel toothless kind of.ew.

I read that after fillings your tooth becomes weaker and brittle especially after many years so it can break easier and dentists can simply crown it to make it ok.

I have a dr. apt tomorrow so please dont respond by saying to go to the dentist. I know that, and I am..but i want help right now. Real answers please.

You'll either need a new filling, a crown, or onlay which is kind of like a really big filling...

And it's not so much that your teeth become weaker after fillings, it's that the materials fillings are made of tend to shrink over time, so food and germs get back into the tooth and continue to decay it which weakens them...If your filling was that old, you were probably due for a new one anyway.
Reply:I have had friends this has happened to. Teeth aren't easily repaired the way we like to think, and if done properly, looks very real. Cosmetic bonding may work, where they surround the tooth with a tooth shaped wall, fill it with the bonding, and when it hardens, it looks brand new, hopefully, that's the case with you. Good luck! here's a link for other people to peruse.
Reply:Go to the drug store and in the dental area you should find dental wax or temp filling. Since you have apt - I would suggest the wax because it won't harden up. Put it on the tooth to smooth out and fill in area until you see the dentist.
